Drafting

Once, there was a little mouse named Cole who lived in a small burrow made of dirt. His home was in a small forest, but he had never been out of the forest and always wondered what was on the other side of the many tall trees and bushes. One day, his sister, Maggie, came over to his burrow to visit him. Cole told Maggie about how he longed to escape the dark, gloomy, forest, and together they decided to journey outside the forest. After walking for a while, they came to a big road that had cars crawling all over it.

"We shouldn't venture out this far," Maggie exclaimed frightened.

"Oh, it's ok, I'm here to protect you," was his response, but he himself felt afraid. The mice chattered a bit more and then decided to follow the gravel road, but kept hidden in the edge of the clearing. After what seemed like forever, they found a old fashioned school house with little kids playing.

"We can't be seen by the school mistress, she'll crush us to pieces!" Maggie was right, school houses weren't made for mice and so they crept along the bushes out of sight and continued their adventure. Cole and Maggie darted in and out the bushes and hid behind the tall trees on the playground, making sure that they weren't seen. As they were running towards another tree, a young girl spotted them.

"Eek! Look everbody, mice!" The school mistress heard the young girl and started running towards Cole and Maggie, looking very angry. Cole and Maggie were so frightened and they ran for their lives. They ran as fast as they could without looking back and they didn't stop until the school was way out of sight.

"That was really close," Cole said, panting. "We'll have to remember to avoid this school on our way back home." The two mice looked around where they had stopped to rest and found themselves sitting on the edge of a long, pavement road.

Suddenly, they heard a terrifyingly loud roar. They looked up and saw an enormous car coming right towards them! Cole ran for his life again, but Maggie was frozen with fear, staring wide-eyed and helplessly at the monstrous wheels of the giant car. When Cole finally realized that Maggie wasn't going anywhere, he was already too late to save her; to put himself in front of that monster would be suicide. In a last, desperate attempt, he screamed "Run, Maggie, RUN!", but he already knew he was too late. A split second later, he heard the crush of mouse bones and saw his sister's corpse lying on the side of the road, and the roar of the car fading into silence. "If it were only me then maybe my poor little sister might not be dead," Cole said through his tears. He walked over towards Maggie's corpse, picked it up and brought it to the side of the road onto the soft, green grass. He lay her down and buried her into the rich, dark brown soil. He had never felt this sad in his whole entire life. It felt like a sharp knife had cut into his heart and that he would never be happy again. Cole sat beside the copse of his sister that he had burried and cried fo a long, long time.            After it had gotten dark, Cole rubbed his eyes and told himself that we would return home and never leave the forest again. But then he thought of Maggie and what she would think of this idea. She wouldn't have wanted him to abandon all his ideas and thoughts of adventure just because she couldn't be with him. After thinking about this, he decided that he would leave the next day after he had gotten some sleep. He collected some large yellow, red and brown leaves and some tall, wide blades of grass to make a bed for himself to sleep in. He lay down on the bed he had made and fell into a deep sleep.

He dreamt that that he and his sister were still on that cold, gray, pavement road and that he could hear the sound of the large car. It was roaring down the street where he and his sister were rooted to the spot. As Cole saw it, he wanted to scream to his sister to run out of the way; to get back to the side of the road and into the tall grass. He was yelling and shouting at the top of his aching lungs, but his sister, Maggie, couldn't hear him. The car came zooming down the road and hit his sister. Over and over again, Cole had this same dream untill he finally woke up, late in the bright, sunny afternoon. When he woke up, he hoped that things would be back to the way they were, back in their small, gloomy forest, below the tall trees and living in their comfortable burrow. He thought of all those happy thoughts, but he knew that he would not have any of those good times with his sister, Maggie, ever again.

Cole scurried around the wet ground in search of tasty seeds and berries for him to eat. Cole ate his breakfast on a small rock and once he had finished, said good-bye to his burried sister and set off to continue his adventure.

Cole never walked by the road again, so he walked in the forest. Along the way he met a mole who's name was Spikes. Spikes talked with Cole about his loss and they walked together. It turns out that Spikes was on a similar journey as Cole. Spikes wanted an adventure too. They talked about the beautiful trees and the great smelling flowers. They saw many things that they hadn't seen before. There were many people with white things in their ears and holding a square pieces of plastic. One afternoon, Cole and Spikes were walking like usual.

"So Spikes, did you have any siblings?" asked Cole

"Yes," said Spikes sadly, "I did."

"What happened to her?"

"She got crushed by a car." replied Spikes, "I buried her 40 miles south of here. Where I met you"

Coles mouth fell open. "What was the date of her death." asked Cole eagerly.

"I'm not sure. It was a few years ago."

Cole was astounded. Yes, Spikes looked a few years older than him and they always got along so well. Spikes was also the same breed as Spikes. What did this mean?! Does it mean that Spikes is actually Cole and Cole was looking at a reflection of himself 5 years later? Coles was scared.

Commenting

Stories show something happening, they don't tell about it.

Some suggestions for your comments:

"he bolted in a panic".......can become......"nostrils flaring, hackles spiked, teeth bared, eyes starting...."

"he felt nervous".........can become.............."his heart thumped like a hammer...he felt jumpy and twisted up inside....a thousand drummers were pounding away on his head..."

He snapped his long tail angrily.........can become..............."raising his muzzle and bearing his teeth, he snapped his long tail."

this is extremely annoying. I SPENT HALF AN HOUR MAKING THINGS PRETTY AND ADDING TO THE STORY AND SOMEONE STEALS THE LOCK.
