Drafting

One night, a small mouse named Cedric crept out of his burrow. He had long, naked ears - unusual for his age- and was often teased about it. He had a white stripe on his back, but the rest of his fur was dark brown. His hairless tail curled around his body. Cedric peeped outside hopefully, yearning for a clear night. Apparently, his desire for a clear night was rejected by mother nature as lightning crackled across the dark sky, and the wind blew furiously. A sharp gust of icy wind slammed into Cedric's small, shivering face. Thunder rumbled, the dark waves of the lake crashed against the shore, and rain pelted down on the ground like ice, with sounds like gunshots, echoing in the dark night. This sight made Cedric want to go back into his warm cozy hole in the ground, but then his stomach growled, forcing him to gallop to the next form of shelter.A tall, towering sunflower plant whose green, healthy leaves were providing a dry spot in the drenched soil of the dreary forest. Cedric's cute, beedy eyes darted around nervously, searching for another hide-out. Cedric was a poor, bedraggled sight. His search for food was looking grim. The fruit that had fallen from the trees was black and rotten. Seeds, grains, flowers, leaves and small plants had already been gathered earlier in the day while Cedric was asleep. All the insects were hiding under logs too big for Cedric to move. Cedric had never travelled into the lands beyond the big oak tree, but if he wanted food, he didnt have a choice.

Cedric gathered up all his nerves looked around carefully his eyes darting, and dashed to the next shelter, the big towering oak tree where Edwin the third lived with his second wife and children. Edwin III was Cedrics biggest problem because he wanted gooble him up in one big bite. Edwin was a grey owl and loved snackind on little mice like cedric. When he got to the big oak tree his heart was thumping like a hammer and he curled up to the roots of the oak tree breathing heavily. All of a sudden Cedric heard a loud booming voice as Edwin III hooted out in to the dreay forest " I see you Cedric, you better run as fast as you can"! His voice echoed in the empty forest bouncing off trees and the heading straight to Cedric. Cedric quickly stood up his eyes looking for a spot to hide then he felt Edwin III's talcons skim his back as he took his first swoop. He knew there was no time to run back to his hole, he had to go where no western harvest mouse had gone before. Into the land beyond the great oak tree, into lurking danger behing every corner. He ran as fast as his little legs could carry him not knowing that running for safety was just throughing him self in danger. As he ran to who knows where he looked over his shoulder and saw Edwin III still following him.

The sky was getting darker than dark, the rain was getting bigger. Cedric was running as fast as he could, hoping to lose the owl. But suddenly, Cedric tripped on a small tree branch and fell into the puddle of mud in front of him. The poor mouse sat on the mire and whimpered tearfully as the owl, Edwin III, landed smoothly in front of him with his big eyes glowering at him. Cedric was not afraid, no, he was never afraid of Edwin III. Even though he worried at times about his safety around the big ugly owl, but no, he was simply not  frightened by him. Cedric's stomach growled as he finally managed to step out of the messy mud pool; his growl was greeted by the deep, hollow laughter of the owl. "Hungry, aren't you?" Edwin III's voiced boomed out in the forest and echoed back. "Well, well, well, we have finally came to this day, haven't we?" The owl smile slyly as he took a step closer to the mouse. Cedric pasted a fake smile to his lips and turned his head to look anywhere but the owl and answered shakily, "I certainly don't worth a lot, if you want to take me in and have me as a midnight snack, then very well, go ahead. I am not scared of anything, especially hairy, revolting creatures like you." The owl open his mouth and closed it again. Then he shooked his head slowly to himself with a small smile on his face. Then he turned to face Cedric again, and snarled, "Walk faster, we are going up to my oak tree."

Stories show something happening, they don't tell about it.

Some suggestions for your comments:

"he bolted in a panic".......can become......"nostrils flaring, hackles spiked, teeth bared, eyes starting...."

"he felt nervous".........can become.............."his heart thumped like a hammer...he felt jumpy and twisted up inside....a thousand drummers were pounding away on his head..."
